Each walk represents a moment of connection, a conversation shared, a helping hand offered, and a reminder that no one has to navigate life alone.

Guests enjoyed lunch together, reminisced about favorite memories from the program, and stepped into a photo booth to capture the “little moments” that make the Senior Escort Program so special. The photos served as a meaningful reminder that sometimes it’s the simplest moments – a shared smile, a walk around the neighborhood, or a conversation between friends – that leave the greatest impact.

The Senior Escort Program was launched in 2022 in response to the rise in anti-Asian hate incidents targeting older adults. What began as a way to help seniors feel safer while walking in their neighborhoods, grocery shopping, or navigating medical appointments, has grown into a vibrant community built on trust, compassion, and friendship. Today, the program is open to all seniors, creating opportunities for people of all backgrounds to build meaningful relationships while promoting safety, independence, and healthy aging.

Throughout the celebration, attendees reflected on the many friendships that have blossomed over the past several years. Volunteers have faithfully shown up week after week, generously giving their time to walk alongside participants through life’s everyday moments, both joyful and challenging. In return, participants have inspired volunteers with their resilience, wisdom, and kindness, reminding us all of the importance of staying connected as we age.<img decoding="async" class="alignright wp-image-27790 size-medium" src="https://www.accsv.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Remy002-300x300.jpg" alt="Three women smile and talk at a celebration with yellow balloons and a 50 balloon in the background. The participant said, “I might not always be able to walk, but I’m always going to remember this moment.” Those words perfectly capture what the Senior Escort Program is all about. It’s not simply about reaching a destination. It’s about creating memories and relationships that last long after the walk is over.

ner who has helped make these first 5,000 walks possible. Every new volunteer, participant, and community partnership helps extend this circle of care to even more older adults.
In response to anti-Asian hate incidents, the Senior Escort Program was formed as a collaborative effort to protect seniors while out in the community. Over time, the program has evolved from a safety initiative to a source of independence and social connection for seniors – one walk at a time. The Senior Escort Program matches seniors with friendly volunteers who meet them at their home or a location of choice to take walks around the neighborhood, shop at local grocery stores, or navigate through doctors’ offices for appointments. During walks, participants are able to connect with volunteers one-on-one and boost their physical and mental health.

“At the heart of The Center’s Stop the Hate initiative is a commitment to equity, safety and hope for communities impacted by hate and bias. We are incredibly proud to support ACC’s Senior Escort Program through our CDSS Stop the Hate funding, which has transformed fear into connection and empowerment for seniors of all backgrounds. This incredible milestone of 2,500 walks exemplifies the power of community-based solutions in fostering inclusion and progress,” said Kaying Hang, president of The Center at Sierra Health Foundation, which serves as regional lead for Stop the Hate statewide, Northern California and San Joaquin Valley partnerships.

Recently, volunteers and participants gathered together at the ACC Senior Services campus to celebrate a milestone for the program. The Senior Escort Program has coordinated over 2500 individual walks throughout the Sacramento region. This is a major milestone reached since the programs humble beginnings in 2021, during the COVID-19 Pandemic, with just one volunteer and one participant. The rapid growth of the program is due in part to the amazing dedication of the many volunteer escorts.

Dani Lee was the first volunteer with the Senior Escort Program and shared the inaugural walk with participant Mollie Chow in 2021, “It is amazing to see how the program has grown from just one volunteer and one participant to now serving hundreds of people! To this day, Mollie and I are still friends four years later, and it is just a testament to how the program can connect two complete strangers and make lasting connections. The Senior Escort Program is a great way for people to give back to the community, but come away with lots of wisdom and lasting friendships.” Mollie adds “Walking is the best way to be active for me. Seniors like to get out and do things, but don’t always feel safe to do so, and we feel very accepted at ACC.”

Since 2021, the Senior Escort Program has thrived in a post-covid environment. With seniors feeling the isolation of the Pandemic, and family members encouraging their loved ones to get back out and socialize, SEP has become a lifeline in many seniors’ mental and physical health routines. “To be able to serve people in need is incredibly rewarding and it’s so simple. Sometimes basic human contact is all that’s required, whether it’s walking, shopping, chatting or just listening. By holding a hand or providing a steady arm, I definitely feel that I get as much benefit from the program as I give”, Mike Miller, a recent retiree and volunteer with ACC’s Senior Escort Program, explains, “This program has truly changed my life for the better. I have met so many wonderful people of varying ages and abilities. They are all inspiring. At the end of nearly every walk, one of us will say – “You made my day!” – and we mean it.”

Frank Lee, son of Helen Lee, who walks with Mike shared how this program has benefited his family, “it has been a true blessing. Besides having companionship outside of family members, mom said that talking with her new friends stimulates her mind. The volunteers have all been wonderful; they make connecting with mom look easy. Mom looks forward to going on her weekly walks with Mike. Sometimes they even walk to get coffee together. My mother and Mike bonded over their love of cooking and have shared tips on how to make oxtail stew. It is very comforting to me to know that mom is safe when she is out with Mike or with any of the other ACC volunteers.”

Jeri Shikuma, ACC Home & Community-Based Programs Administrator shares “At ACC, we’re focused on helping isolated seniors and their family caregivers make meaningful connections, build relationships, and “get out of the house” because our experience shows us, and studies prove, that isolation and loneliness are linked to poor physical and mental health outcomes including higher rates of chronic disease, depression, dementia, and suicide. To combat what the US Surgeon General has named our epidemic of isolation and loneliness, our Senior Escort Program (SEP) meets people where they live, and helps them feel safe and comfortable being out in the community to socialize, exercise, or accomplish daily errands and appointments. As an added benefit they often befriend the volunteers who accompany them, talking to them, and learning about their backgrounds, creating moments of connection and expanded awareness. The care and joy that result from these moments are contagious! The SEP truly is a model for how individuals and communities can be healthier, happier, and more connected.”

To learn more about the Senior Escort Program, volunteer or donate, please visit our website at https://www.accsv.org/senior-escort-program/ or call (916) 503-0292.

ACC Senior Services – Senior Escort Program (SEP)
7334 Park City Drive, Sacramento Ca 95831
https://www.accsv.org/

This September, ACC’s Senior Escort Program is not only celebrating its second year, it’s also spearheading a community event in honor of United Against Hate Week (UAHW). UAHW is a week-long effort promoting local civic action from various communities to combat hate and promote safety and inclusivity in our neighborhoods, towns, and cities.

This year, UAHW is from September 21-27. Leading up to UAHW, the Senior Escort Program is hosting monthly trainings on important topics such as Bystander Intervention, Situational Awareness, and Cultural Sensitivity. Building a more equitable and safe community begins with educating our communities by giving them tools to face and prevent various forms of hate – physical and emotional.

Over the past two years, ACC has acquired funding from the California Department of Social Services under the Stop the Hate grant to support the Senior Escort Program. To kickoff UAHW, we’re collaborating with other grantees, Hmong Innovating Politics (HIP) and Asian American Liberation Network (AALN).

We’ll also be joined by some of our other community partner organizations – highlighting the crucial work we’re all doing to “Stop the Hate.” Together we stand united against hate by creating a safe space for community celebration and understanding. Our hope is that attendees can learn about our communities through cultural performances, food, art, and conversation.

Hate impacts everyone – regardless of age, gender, race, or culture. Our goal is to reach across generations and cultures, and provide resources and visibility to unite against hate.

If you’re interested in being a part of this movement and joining the effort against hate, we encourage you to take part in one (or all) of our trainings, attend our event, and become a Senior Escort Program Volunteer! More information on these topics can be found on ACC’s website under the Senior Escort Program.

Since its inception in 2022, ACC’s Senior Escort Program celebrates the incredible milestone of completing 1500 walks.

Based on our 2023 survey, 90% of participants feel safer using the Senior Escort Program, and 72% of participants have felt an improvement with their mental health since starting the program.

In addition to daily walks, Senior Escort Program staff schedules multiple shopping trips and group outings for participants and volunteers. These outings not only give participants a variety of opportunities to get out safely, but also provide extra socialization between participants at a similar stage in life. Volunteers have also shared their joy in meeting other volunteers, and connecting on their passion of giving back to the community. “I love meeting such a wide range of individuals, providing a safe feeling outside, and letting seniors know that they are not alone. I enjoy this program so very much, and I am sure I get more out of it than the seniors,” says Senior Escort Program Volunteer, Julie Zumalt.

Another goal of the Senior Escort Program is to combat isolation – physically and emotionally. 83% of participants feel less socially isolated since starting the program. “I feel that having an escort improves my social isolation since I am a widow and cancer survivor. Despite having family members to help, it’s better having a neutral party to talk to,” says Senior Escort Program Participant, Mariko Yamashita .

ACC’s Senior Escort Program has been able to expand, not only in size, but across generations, race/ethnicity, and disabilities. In creating a safe space for seniors and volunteers, we’re able to work towards creating a community of caring and sense of belonging. “I appreciate and love all of the escorts. I always look forward to walking with them. I feel like I can be myself and become more independent,” says Wanda Thomas, a blind participant of ACC’s Senior Escort Program.

Reach out to our Senior Escort Program Coordinator and learn about ways you can become a participant/volunteer, or support our program!
