A century of kindness, family, hard work, and memories worth celebrating

At ACC Senior Services, we believe every older adult has a story worth knowing and celebrating. A lifetime is made up of countless moments—family gatherings, friendships, traditions, challenges overcome, favorite pastimes, and lessons passed from one generation to the next.

Few milestones capture the richness of a life quite like 100 years.

Today we celebrate ACC Care Center resident Wing Kwong, whose remarkable journey has taken him across countries, through generations, and through a century filled with family, hard work, resilience, and joy.

A Journey Across Continents

Wing was born in India to an Indian mother and Chinese father, giving him a unique heritage that has been an important part of his life story.

In 1971, Wing made his way from China to America, beginning a new chapter and building a life in the United States. He eventually spent many years working as a cook at Frank Fat’s before retiring.

Through his working years, Wing was known as a hardworking businessman and dedicated family man. His journey reflects the courage it takes to begin anew, build a life in a new country, and create a lasting foundation for those who come after you.

Family: His Greatest Legacy

Ask Wing about what matters most, and his family is at the center of his story.

Today, his family spans an extraordinary five generations, including:

8 children
16 grandchildren
17 great-grandchildren
1 great-great-grandchild

Five generations represent more than a family tree. They represent memories shared, traditions carried forward, stories told and retold, and values passed from one generation to the next.

For Wing, reaching 100 means having the remarkable opportunity to witness his family continue to grow—and to see the legacy of his life reflected in those he loves.

The Wisdom of a Century

When asked about the secret to living 100 years, Wing doesn’t offer a complicated formula.

His advice is simple:

“Be a good person, be an honest person, and be a nice person.”

There is something powerful about such straightforward wisdom.

Wing is known for his positive and humble spirit. He is someone who doesn’t complain and approaches life with kindness and grace.

After a century of experiences, his message reminds us that a meaningful life isn’t necessarily measured by accomplishments or possessions. Sometimes, it is measured by how we treat the people around us and the difference we make in their lives.

Finding Joy Along the Way

A life well lived also leaves plenty of room for the things that bring us joy.

For Wing, one of those joys has always been fishing. But he didn’t stop at catching the fish—he enjoyed cooking his catch, combining two of his favorite pastimes.

Music has also brought Wing happiness throughout his life. He enjoys Chinese music, karaoke, and Chinese opera, creating opportunities to sing, celebrate, and share joyful moments with others.

These passions are a wonderful reminder that aging is not about leaving behind the things we love. It is about continuing to find meaning, connection, and enjoyment in the activities that bring us happiness.

Strength Through Life’s Challenges

A century inevitably brings challenges as well as celebrations.

Wing’s journey includes an especially remarkable chapter: he overcame pancreatic cancer without undergoing treatment. His experience is another part of a life characterized by strength and resilience.

Through life’s challenges, Wing has continued forward with a caring spirit and positive outlook.

His story reminds us that longevity is about more than the number of years we live. It is about the experiences we gather, the relationships we nurture, the challenges we face, and the memories we create along the way.

Celebrating a Life Well Lived

At ACC Senior Services, we know that every older adult brings a lifetime of experiences, knowledge, traditions, and wisdom to our community. Celebrating those stories helps us recognize the incredible contributions older adults make to their families and communities.

Wing Kwong’s 100 years offer a beautiful example.

His legacy can be found in his five generations of family. It can be heard in the music he loves. It can be remembered in the meals he prepared and the work he devoted himself to. And it can be felt in the simple values he continues to share: be good, be honest, and be nice.

One hundred years is an extraordinary milestone—but Wing’s story shows us that the true measure of a life is not simply how long it lasts.

It is how fully it is lived and how many lives it touches along the way.

Happy 100th Birthday, Wing!

From all of us at ACC Senior Services, we celebrate this incredible milestone and the remarkable life behind it.

Here’s to 100 years of family, memories, resilience, music, fishing, cooking, kindness—and a legacy that will continue for generations to come.

This quarter, we are proud to highlight Jerry Leong, whose lifelong connection to Sacramento and deep family roots within ACC Senior Services continue to shape our community in meaningful ways. Raised in Southern Sacramento, Jerry built a successful career in the private sector, working in banking and finance before transitioning to public service with the California Department of General Services (DGS) and later Cal Fire. After decades of dedicated work, he retired in November 2022, ready to invest more time in the community that helped raise him.
In early 2023, as ACC looked for better ways to engage men and encourage regular participation in programs, staff began exploring ideas that would feel welcoming, familiar, and fun. The result was the creation of “Cards and Conversation”, a simple but powerful concept designed to bring men and women together through friendly card games, shared stories, and genuine connection. Jerry, a recent retiree well known among the staff, had a special love for playing cards. His passion began early in life, sparked by watching his uncle’s play during family gatherings. Before long, he wasn’t just observing, he was joining in, which shaped a lifelong hobby. What began as an experiment, Jerry grew into a lively, multigenerational gathering that reflects the spirit of community.
Starting with one table to play Texas Hold ’Em, has quickly grown into one of ACC’s most consistently attended social programs. In those early weeks, the group was small but enthusiastic, with 3–4 volunteers helping set up, deal cards, and welcome new participants. The atmosphere was relaxed, familiar, and exactly what the staff hoped for: a space where men could connect through friendly competition and easy conversation.
Today, the program has expanded to 3 active tables, drawing 7–10 players at each table. Two of the tables continue the tradition of Texas Hold ’Em, with the third offering a dealer’s choice format, giving participants the chance to introduce new games, share old favorites, and keep the experience fresh. A dedicated table is also set aside for Bridge enthusiasts whenever there’s enough interest among players. This flexibility has become part of the program’s charm, inviting both seasoned card players and curious newcomers to join in.
As “Cards and Conversation” continues to grow, Jerry is the first to point out that its success rests squarely on the shoulders of the volunteers who show up week after week. Their commitment, whether dealing cards, greeting participants, or simply creating a welcoming atmosphere, is what transforms a simple card game into a meaningful community space. Jerry emphasizes that volunteers are the heart of the program, and their steady presence is what keeps players returning, friendships forming, and the room filled with laughter and connection.
Jerry has been at the heart of this growth. His presence, encouragement, and ability to make everyone feel welcome have helped shape the program into what it is today—a place where men can relax, laugh, share stories, and build friendships that extend far beyond the card table.

Have you been out to see ACC’s garden yet? Many people still don’t know that ACC has a community garden tucked behind our building at the far end of the field. This year, 45 seniors are gardening in nearly 30 plots, and there’s something new to discover every time you visit. You’ll find everything: corn and tomatoes to flowers, herbs, and even melons growing throughout the garden.
One of the best things about the garden is seeing how each person makes their plot their own. Every gardener has a unique way of growing and caring for their plants. At the front of the garden, you’ll also notice eight raised dark-green planters that are built at a comfortable height, making it easier for seniors to garden without bending over. These planters help keep the program accessible for people with mobility challenges and physical limitations.
Our gardeners are a diverse and inspiring group. Two participants are over 90 years old, and six gardeners are blind or have low vision. Several volunteers help support these gardeners by assisting with tasks like digging holes, planting, and watering when needed.
Sharon, who has her own plot, recently helped her mom, Peggy, get started with a garden plot of her own. Peggy is 94 years old. “I’m so glad to get my mom out here,” Sharon said. “At home she was sitting too much. She loves getting out in the sunshine and seeing how each plant is progressing.”
For many participants, the garden offers much more than a place to grow vegetables. It provides a reason to get outside, stay active, and connect with others. Laverne, who has been partially blind for about three years, calls her gardening experience “vision without sight.” With the help of a volunteer, she planted tomatoes and enjoys checking on them by touch. She says gardening makes her feel happy and encouraged because it reminds her that she can still do something she loves, even without full sight. Another blind gardener was thrilled last year when she got to feel a fully grown ear of corn on the stalk.
The garden has become a place where seniors can stay active, enjoy nature, learn from one another, and build friendships. While each gardener takes care of their own plot, many look forward to sharing some of their harvest with ACC social groups and fellow participants.
If you’re interested in joining the garden this fall, please reach out to program staff for more information.

Each walk represents a moment of connection, a conversation shared, a helping hand offered, and a reminder that no one has to navigate life alone.

Guests enjoyed lunch together, reminisced about favorite memories from the program, and stepped into a photo booth to capture the “little moments” that make the Senior Escort Program so special. The photos served as a meaningful reminder that sometimes it’s the simplest moments – a shared smile, a walk around the neighborhood, or a conversation between friends – that leave the greatest impact.

The Senior Escort Program was launched in 2022 in response to the rise in anti-Asian hate incidents targeting older adults. Today, the program is open to all seniors, creating opportunities for people of all backgrounds to build meaningful relationships while promoting safety, independence, and healthy aging.

Throughout the celebration, attendees reflected on the many friendships that have blossomed over the past several years. Volunteers have faithfully shown up week after week, generously giving their time to walk alongside participants through life’s everyday moments, both joyful and challenging. In return, participants have inspired volunteers with their resilience, wisdom, and kindness, reminding us all of the importance of staying connected as we age.<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright wp-image-27790 size-medium" src="https://www.accsv.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Remy002-300x300.jpg" alt="Three women smile and talk at a celebration with yellow balloons and a 50 balloon in the background. The participant said, “I might not always be able to walk, but I’m always going to remember this moment.” Those words perfectly capture what the Senior Escort Program is all about. It’s not simply about reaching a destination. It’s about creating memories and relationships that last long after the walk is over.

ner who has helped make these first 5,000 walks possible.
If Elvyra Abare’s name rings a bell at ACC Senior Services, there’s a good reason. Nearly a decade ago, she was working behind the scenes as a volunteer and later as Director of Staff Development and Administrator in Training at the ACC Care Center, while ACC Maple Tree Village was still just a vision. Now, she’s returned to the ACC family—this time as Executive Director of Maple Tree Village—and in less than three months, she’s already making a strong impression.

Born in Kherson, Ukraine, Elvyra trained as a nurse and earned a master’s degree before immigrating to the United States 26 years ago in search of greater opportunity. Like many who start over in a new country, she rebuilt her career from the ground up—earning her CNA certification in Sacramento and working across skilled nursing settings before rising into leadership.

She now brings more than 20 years of experience across continuing care retirement communities, assisted living, and skilled nursing. Her resume includes executive leadership roles at Canterbury Woods in Pacific Grove, Webster House in Palo Alto, and most recently as Chief Operating Officer at Channing House. Along the way, she’s built a reputation for strengthening operations, improving care quality, and leading high-performing teams.
But for Elvyra, the work has always been personal. “When I was 12, my grandmother fractured her hip,” she recalls. “At that time, in the Soviet Union, surgery wasn’t an option. She lived in constant pain, and as grandchildren, we helped care for her. That experience stayed with me—it’s why I chose healthcare.”

At Maple Tree Village, what stands out most to her isn’t just the care—it’s the families. “I see daughters coming in for every meal to spend time with mom. Sons stopping by daily to play pool with their dads. That kind of involvement is rare, and it warms my heart. It says a lot about this community.”

Her vision for the future is ambitious but clear: build a top-tier team, elevate services across dining, care, and enrichment, and position Maple Tree Village as a leading senior community for the broader Sacramento region. A special focus will also be placed on meaningful, personalized memory care—with strong collaboration between staff and families.
And while she’s a self-described “go-getter,” Elvyra also knows how to recharge. After work, you might find her painting delicate watercolor landscapes, kayaking along the coast, hiking, or traveling. “I like to collect life experiences,” she says.

From her earliest days as a volunteer to now leading the charge at Maple Tree Village, her journey comes full circle—igniting renewed energy, hope, and opportunity for the community she serves.

On Wednesday, May 20, 2026, golfers, sponsors, volunteers, and community supporters gathered at beautiful Teal Bend Golf Course for ACC Senior Services’ 19th Annual Golf Tournament—a day filled with friendly competition, meaningful connections, and unwavering support for older adults in our community.

From the moment golfers arrived for check-in and breakfast, the excitement was palpable. The morning’s shotgun start sent teams out across the course under clear skies, ready to enjoy a fantastic day of golf while making a lasting impact on the lives of Sacramento-area seniors. The tournament featured a scramble format, closest-to-the-pin contests, raffle opportunities, and plenty of camaraderie among players of all skill levels.

While the golf itself provided plenty of memorable moments, the true highlight of the day was the incredible generosity displayed by our sponsors, players, and supporters. Every registration, sponsorship, raffle ticket, and donation helps ACC Senior Services continue providing vital programs that empower older adults to age with dignity, independence, and connection.

Following the tournament, participants gathered at the ACC Campus for lunch, awards, raffle drawings, and an opportunity to celebrate the collective impact of the day’s efforts. It was inspiring to see longtime supporters reconnect with friends, welcome new participants, and unite around a shared commitment to serving seniors and family caregivers throughout our community.

Events like the ACC Golf Tournament are about much more than a round of golf. They are a testament to what can be accomplished when a community comes together to support older adults. Funds raised help sustain critical services, including senior living, transportation, caregiver support, supportive and social services, and other resources that thousands of local seniors rely upon each year.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to every golfer, sponsor, volunteer, donor, and community partner who helped make this year’s tournament a success. Your generosity and commitment ensure that ACC Senior Services can continue its mission of enhancing the quality of life for older adults and their families.

As we celebrate another successful tournament, we are already looking forward to next year’s milestone 20TH Anniversary Golf Tournament! Until then, thank you for helping us strengthen our community, build connections, and create brighter futures for the seniors we are privileged to serve.

Together, we are making every swing count.

April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, and on April 25, 2026, ACC proudly celebrated the incredible individuals who give their time and heart to our community.

We welcomed 109 volunteers to a special sit-down, buffet-style lunch filled with delicious dishes and meaningful moments. The menu featured smoked BBQ pork, chow mein, steamed mixed vegetables, wonton soup (with 600 wontons lovingly prepared by John’s parents!), cream cheese wontons, and refreshing boba-flavored teas.

This memorable meal was made possible thanks to generous ingredient donations from Connie Van, John Ha, and SF Market, and was prepared and served by Connie, John, and their family. A special thank you to Café La Vie owner Anh Luu for the boba tea, and to Lela Krueger for the beautiful and tasty desserts—including a watermelon fruit cake, chocolate cupcakes, and vanilla cake.

Guests enjoyed music and sound by Sean, a welcome by Jill Hays, Interim President & CEO, and captured fun moments at the photo booth, and left with swag bags filled with goodies like rice (donated by Farmer’s Rice Coop), Hawaiian Sun drinks (courtesy of Oto’s Marketplace), popcorn, chips, cookies, and sweet treats—plus a brand-new ACC Volunteer lanyard.

This event was truly a team effort, thoughtfully planned and hosted by our Volunteer Services Committee: Mary Bienko, Wes Goo, Judi Keen, and Tracy Shirasago. Our Board Members also pitched in with setup, serving, cleanup, and raffle prize donations.

As Mary Bienko shared during the event:
“Today’s lunch is a small token of our deep appreciation for all you contribute. Your commitment, hard work, and generosity are the backbone of ACC Senior Services. Every hour you volunteer and every task you complete makes a meaningful difference. Over 13,715 volunteer hours were captured in Volunteer Matters in 2025.”

To all our volunteers—thank you for everything you do. You make a difference every single day.

If you missed the invitation or were unable to make the luncheon, please contact Jasmine Holling at volunteer@accsv.org

Photos by Jeff Jong, ACC Camera Club

ACC Care Center Earns 4-Star Rating from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

Sacramento, CA — [22 April, 2026] — ACC Senior Services is proud to announce that the ACC Care Center, Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation, has been awarded a 4-star rating by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), a significant recognition of the organization’s commitment to high-quality care and continuous improvement in skilled nursing services.

The CMS Five-Star Quality Rating System is a nationally recognized benchmark designed to help families evaluate nursing homes based on quality and performance. Ratings are determined through a comprehensive assessment that includes health inspections, staffing levels, and quality measures such as patient outcomes and care practices. Facilities are rated on a scale of one to five stars, with five being the highest.

“I’m excited and proud to share an incredible accomplishment — our facility has achieved a 4-star rating,” said Heidi Wheeler, LVN, ACC Care Center Administrator. “A 4-star rating is not just a number — it represents improved outcomes, strong survey performance, and a culture of accountability. This milestone reflects the dedication, compassion, and hard work that each of our staff brings every day. Providing quality care in skilled nursing takes teamwork, consistency, and heart, and this recognition is a direct result of our commitment to excellence.”

ACC Senior Services Interm CEO Jill Hays also celebrated the achievement, emphasizing its impact on the broader community. “This 4-star recognition is a testament to ACC’s unwavering commitment to those we serve”, shared Hays, “Our Care Center team consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that every resident receives compassionate, person-centered care. We are incredibly proud of this accomplishment and remain focused on continuing to raise the bar for quality and innovation in senior care.”

The CMS rating system is updated regularly to reflect the most current data available, ensuring transparency and accountability across the healthcare industry. The ACC Care Center’s achievement demonstrates its ongoing efforts to enhance care delivery, prioritize resident well-being, and meet rigorous federal standards.
