Senior Companionship Program

We’re there to be a companion, just watch over them, just keep them busy, play games, cards, anything they like to do. I put myself in their place.  It’s a loving, giving situation.

Social interaction is a vital part of preventing isolation and depression among seniors. A report published in the American Journal of Public Health studied 2249 women who were 78 years or older. Women with larger social networks had higher cognitive function and lower risk of dementia than women with small social networks. Other studies have shown that seniors with strong social connections live healthier and longer.

ACC Friendly Visitor Program

While ACC attracts many older adults to its programs and social activities, not everyone is able to travel to our locations to participate. As part of the Legacy Corp AmeriCorps program, ACC Friendly Visitor Program trains and places volunteers to socialize with homebound seniors and those with disabilities.

Their primary activities include:

  • Conversation and companionship
  • Play games or engage in creative arts
  • Light exercise, short-distant walks
  • Reading, watching TV/movies together

ACC Friendly Visitor Program is also designed to give family caregivers an opportunity to take a break from their caregiving duties. Priority is given to veterans and veteran families.

For more information, contact the Program Director Linda Revilla, at (916) 393-9026 ext. 323, by email, or see the Friendly Visitor Fact Sheet.
